Thanks

Hi folks,
Thanks to all those who have been concerned for us. I could not reply earlier as we had no power or phone until 5:30pm. It handy to live on 5 acres with plenty of trees. We have been very thankful that we sustained no house damage and only lost a few ornaments and some crockery. It has been a very scary day for us and some of the recent aftershocks have been very strong. We were woken at 4:35 am. The shake was very violent. Cupboards were emptied through all the rooms and hallway. By torchlight we ramped up the fire to give some light and boil the kettle for a cuppa, being careful where we stood. After daylight we realised the damage was only superficial.
It is strange,as we live 12km west of Christchurch in a direct line to the quake centre 20 km further west. Darfield is my boyhood territory and it is only older buildings in that area that are damaged.
Christchurch and the Kaiapoi area where most damage occurred are built on reclaimed swamp and sand. The wise man built his house on the rock! The other positive is that most high rise buildings and hotels in the city are built to earthquake resistant specifications. It is damage to water lines and sewers that will cost the city millions and provide the most ongoing difficulty for the citizens.
Of course the greatest loss was to some jars of miniatures that tipped over in the cooler. They had been picked for the National next weekend.
Michael and Marian are fine as are Malcolm and Rozanne.

  1. So glad to hear our friends are well; too bad about the miniatures tho. hehe.
Sounds like it could have been much worse.
    My best to Leitha too.
