Autumn blooming daffodils for colder climates

Today the daffodil in the picture flowered for the first time. It is a seedling of (( Edna Earl x Flower Record)1 x ( Edna Earl x Flower Record ) 2 )) x ( N. viridiflorus). Forty seeds of this cross were sowed in 2003 and nine plants of them are still living. A second flower shall bloom in a few days. In the first year the plants grew in a heated bed and afterwards in the open. In the winter of 2008/2009 and in the following winter 2009/2010 temperatures of  – 12 to  -14 degrees C in some nights were measured. The plants with well developed leafs withstood these temperatures without damage. As you know N. viridiflorus does not resist freezing.

The flowering time of the daffodil is exact that of the pollen parent N. viridiflorus. Furthermore it inherited the intense fragrance of the parent .My intention concerning viridiflorus crosses was to get plants which flower early in spring in Germany and tolerate the temperatures in winter. But if some flower in October it may be still better.

The second photo is not in focus, but I could not take another picture because the blossom was cut for getting the pollen.
