hydroponic daffodils?

Just for the heck of it, I put three small, dry mystery daffodil bulbs into a small styrofoam coffee cup, added water to about the half way point, put the cup on our kitchen sink, and ignored it for most of October.

Today, one of the bulbs has sprouted some short roots and a thin green 1/2″ stem!  The two other bulbs just look wet.
I’ve replenished the water, but now what?
FYI, our kitchen lights are fluorescent tubes in the ceiling.

  1. Vicky, they will likely only produce foliage, since they probably haven't had a cold season.  Usually when forcing bulbs, which is basically what you're doing, you add water up only to the base of the bulb and add some gravel or marbles or such to add some support to hold the bulb in position as it grows.  But most daffodils need weeks of cold temperatures before they will produce a flower.  At the least, you'll be able to see how daffodil roots and shoots grow!  ;->

  2. Vicki and Becky,
I didn’t get around to planting all of the mixed, unselected seedlings this year. They sat dry in an old fibrolight glasshouse. Many have flowered. As the flower forms in the bulb soon after lifting time unplanted bulbs are likely to flower regardless of how we treat them. The key for Vicki is to ensure the bulbs don’t get too wet nor too warm to prevent rotting.
