odd question

Apologies for a daft question, but…

Was looking for Beryl for someone who wants to buy at this late date, so cruising the various on-line catalogs

[Oh – if anyone has any to sell, let me know…]

Looked at one that’s selling ‘Merlin’; thought that looks kinda phunnie…

Went to DaffSeek, and there’s a serious range of appearance for ‘Merlin’…

Is the variation in rim form and color simply climate induced?

    I looked at the pictures and will stick my neck out and say that every one of them are Merlin.  I enjoy this sort of thing – identifying cultivars.
    So here is what I see.  All the petals in every picture are identical.  They are all shovel shaped with somewhat rounded tips.  The dimensions are the same in all cases, just slightly longer than it is wide.  But the cup is what you see as different.  Well, the sun can burn off a bit of the cup edge and it looks as if it has in a few cases.  The one thing you should look for when trying to decide if a bloom is really Merlin is that the edge of the cup is lobed (properly called “goffered”).  One has just a little of it, but it looks to me as if it is an older flower and the cup has flattened a bit, and perhaps the edge is a bit burned.  The width of the rim can be different in different climates and with different cultivation.
    They are all Merllin, in my opinion.

  2. I just replanted stocks of Beryl on Saturday. Drats!

     

    Merlin rots for me after a few years… haven’t grown in long enough to tell.  That said, there images on Daffseek look consistent to me… Mary Lou’s images, the palest, appear how I remember mine growing: not so rimmed as ones grown in milder climes.
