Sawdust

Hi Keith,
You are right, the Campbells are two houses east of the epicentre. I knew Daffnet readers were clever and, whats more, you beat Linda.
I have been somewhat sceptical of David’s use of sawdust. I know daffs don’t need nitrogen. His beds are very tidy and weed free, flowers are good but I sometimes think the bulbs are affected when lifted. Is it the sawdust?
In New Zealand most of the timber used is radiata pine so it is safe to assume the sawdust collected direct from the mill is radiata. Thousands of acres of pine cover the country, often planted as an investment crop. This is also the bark used in bark mulch and potting mixes here.

  1. Celia Jones (Sisters’ Bulb Farm) isn’t likely on Daffnet, but she grows many acres of daffodils, mostly
jonquilla, very successfully in land just cleared of pine trees, and therefore likely covered with ample
    sawdust.
I thought sawdust (not rotted) took the nitrogen OUT of your flower beds? Is that so, and would that be good?
