Hello everyone,
A number of years ago I stopped by to see the late Frank Galyon on my way to the Smokey Mountains and he gave me a single bulb of the above cross. Some one had sent it to him (probably Bob Spotts) and as he had no green house and his winters were pretty cold he was afraid it wouldn’t make it there, he passed it on to me. I think it was an original Manuel Lima cross.
As you can see it’s form is not great but I have enjoyed having something in bloom this time of the year. Has a nice fragrance, multiplies very well, and is basal rot resistant as I have been growing it in a pot and have lost no bulbs. I usually have problems keeping daffodils alive in pots here in Mississippi. The first few years I kept it outside, protected the pot with mulch, during cold weather. The last 2 or 3 years I have been bringing it in the greenhouse while in bloom and during January (our coldest month). Have sent a number of bulbs to growers in Jackson Miss., about 200 miles south of me. Believe it will do fine there.
Regards,
Larry

Hello Larry, Lovely little flower. I’m pleased to see something from El Camino – I named it after having bought the stock from Grant Mitsch and travelled many miles on the El Camino Real with Bill and Rosemary Roese. it might be hardier than you think with that cyclamineus background?!  Have you found if it is fertile?

Larry: You should test its fertility I was able to get seedlings from Jetfire x viridiflorus. This is very nice. Harold

    Larry,
‘El Camino’ x viridiflorus has been fertile for me. I have several very nice seedlings from ‘Cowboy’ x (‘El Camino’ x viridiflorus). Graeme Miller took a photo of one in the 2010 Murphys Show – his photo is in the NZ Annual.

Larry’s sharing of these bulbs was much appreciated. I have had three blooms open for more than a week, and they don’t seem bothered by 24 degree temperatures at night.
