N Ireland

I heard on the radio today that it hit -18 C in N Ireland.  With their humid climate, they must be really freezing.  How are the plants doing?

  1. Colleen the average December temperature for N Ireland is +7C / 44F. The thermometer dipped to -18.7 / -1.6F on Wednesday night. Over three or four nights the coldest night record was broken over and over. Yesterday in parts of N Ireland the thermometer didn’t rise higher than
-13 / 8.5F. On Wednesday the temperature all day was -8c / 17.6F in my garden. Yesterday, Thursday, was the warmest day for a long time in my area with -4c / 24.8F. I hope the F numbers are accurate. I got them from Google

  2. Hi Colleen,
Here in N Ireland we are finding out what it is like to be cold.  The longest cold spell i can remember.  I live near the sea and we are experiencing lows of -14 C. rising to -4 C during the day.  I hope the daffodils are well insulated below the 7″ of snow that fell last week. I’m not so sure how the bulbs in pots will fare at these low temperatures.
I wish all on daffnet a very good Christmas and a successful 2011.

PS My daffodils are planted in rows and I mark every 5th row with a cane.
  3. Thank you!  Your temperatures are colder than here at 4,200 feet (1,280 meters) in the NE Sierra Nevada Mountains!  Last year it got down to -20 F (-28.8 C) for the first time in years and the daffodils seemed to have loved it as we had a very good bloom this year.  We can still get a lot of cold weather here though.  Whenever the weather gets even near 32 F  (0 C ?) around San Francisco, the plants, especially the eucalyptus and jade plants in the area really suffer.  The gardens in your area must really be suffering.

  4. Mark and others in No. Ireland —
I hope you don’t have too much bulb loss from the few that can’t take it that cold.
Those temperatures are normal for us here in central Ohio, but in January, not December.  So far it’s flirted with just under 10F when our average lows should be in the 20s or 30s.  One thing is for certain, we won’t need to guess if it’ll be a white Christmas…I’m pretty sure the couple inches on the ground will still be here in twelve hours.
Happy Christmas from Granville, Ohio, where it’s just below freezing at 28F presently.
