The Northern Ireland Daffodil Group November meeting was the lecture of the year. The speaker was James Akers. He compared the rigid standards set by the florists of the late 18th early 19th century to the standards that are continually changing for todays daffodils. The early daffodil shows had a limited number of classes (usually less than 10) that called for large collections. Modern shows can have over 200 classes. What will happen when the single bloom classes are increased to accomodate new colour codes and a full range of intermediates, miniatures and micro minis. This was a very thought provoking and challenging talk that asked the question ‘Where are we going’.
