Photo is of V04-85-8 a cross of (bear with me here) – [( Narc. bulbocodium ssp. bulbocodium var. nivalis x Narc. bulbocodium sap. praecox) x (N. bulbocodium ssp. var. serotinus x ‘Gadget’)] Sorry if you are studying the inside of your eyelids and yawning……
I sort of think that this is a really cool hybrid because it has five different yellow bulbocodium species in its background (if you include the species parents of ‘Gadget’). It does have greater width than usual of the perianth segments which is most welcome. I have two 14″ clay standard pots filled with progeny from this cross. The bloom time on these seedlings varies all over the place. Some (like this Selection) start to bloom in late winter but others continue to flower until mid-April. Possibly the most varied bloom time of almost anything I’ve raised.
One other thing pleases me about this entire grex. The foliage is prostrate which allows all flowers to stand tall and proud as they are held well above the foliage. I pretty much believe that flowers must be displayed above the foliage. So often in the bulbocodiums the flowers are down in the foliage and partly obscured. I’m excited to see some of these once I have enough individual clones to fill an 8″ azalea pot. I believe that these may well look splendid either in a pan or as potted plants.
