Another question for Daffnetters

While at the computer…. I plan to donate a bulb of Navarre for the bulb auction in Jackson. Mine is the 1Y-Y selection of N. asturiensis that has that name. My question is has it ever been on the ADS approved miniatures list? It is definitely of miniature size. David Burdick

  1. Hi David, I don’t think it has ever been on the Approved Miniatures List, but that’s probably because very few people grow it. Rules of the Mini Committee used to be that three people had to recommend it. Don’t know if that’s still the case or not. In any case, it could be exhibited with the minis, since any small or diminutive flower may be entered there. If the judge thought it was too big, the judge could decline to judge it, and let a note that it’s too big. Once something is on the list, the judge has to judge it, but could deduct points if he/she thought it was too big. My guess is that size isn’t a problem, since it’s a selection of N. asturiensis. My question is how do you keep it going? N. asturiensis dies out quickly for me.

  2. Mary Lou et al, I think this may be a case of the “best way to keep a bulb is to give it away”, meaning that if it gets spread around to other growers and yours does eventually die, you may have an option to get one back again. This will I think be my 6th year growing Navarre. I started with one , two years later still only had one to replant, but then reharvested two years after that and had one to give away and three to replant (these will be lifted this summer). It is the first daffodil to bloom every year, and is the only daffodil I’ve ever had flower in March (normal starting time for me for the earliest mini trumpets in Western MA is 4/10-4/15).
