not for the Bird Challenge

Attached is a photo taken many years ago when we lived in Tennessee.  Paul was president of a company that made coated architectural glass.  We had a lot of doors opening onto patios or decks in the house, and they all had the coated glass.  You could only see one direction–toward the most light.  So during the day, you could see the outdoors, but at night you could see from outside into the house.  So the glass made a perfect “blind” for me to watch birds.  There are 2 male cardinals, one female cardinal, sparrows, a purple or house finch, a goldfinch (I think, the one looking directly at the camera–you can just barely make out the gold under its neck), and a couple black ones that I can’t identify.

  1. You have a couple of other birds here too, Mary Lou. The gray and white one in the foreground and in the left rear are Dark-eyed Juncos. The brown striped ones are female purple or house finches, and the bird behind the goldfinch(?) is a sparrow, possibly a first year White-crowned sparrow – it’s very hard to tell, but the bill has a pinkish hue to me. I love those cardinals. They are rare in our area. We had a male visit our feeders all last winter, but in the spring, after whistling for days to no avail, he finally left to seek a mate elsewhere.
    Sharon,

  2. That’s a nice goose George and he can walk on water as this picture demonstrates. :-0

  3. Hey Cousin,
Nice picture!  I love Canada geese, especially since they are never in my yard.  I probably would hate them.  I love it when the goslings hatch.  There is a pond in front of the YMCA where many geese make nests.  They take the babies across the parking lot to feed on the grass on the other side.  Everyone waits for them to pass before they drive across.  I think if we could train them to use kitty litter, everyone would love these magnificient birds.
