Thanks to those who responded to
my teaser pics. This picture reveals all. This was one of the most attractive
and spectacular flowers I saw on my last visit to New Zealand – I really
thought it was wonderful and I was so impressed and praised it so much
that its raiser John Hunter must have felt obliged and kindly sent me a
bulb – I hope I did not beg!

When this perfect specimen
bloomed last week in my field in Northern Ireland I cut it and kept it in the
bulb shed where I was able to admire it in detail – including the beautiful
shadings from the back view that prompted the teaser photographs. This picture
also shows that the colour coding could equally be YYW – W and I think the hint
of green adds to its beauty.

The second teaser picture
prompted two correct ‘Flight Path’ answers – the first being from Linda Wallpe
and the second, not surprisingly from New Zealand – Andrew
Jenkins. The seeds will wing their way to Linda and I hope she can grow
them to maturity in 3 years and enjoy the
resultant flowers.

Finally, congratulations to John
Hunter for raising such a lovely cultivar – I suspect it will grace
showbenches around the world in future and I hope he does not
mind this little bit of play with his ‘Flight Path’. Now I hope it is
fertile?

Brian……..
I simply do not believe that I got this right.
It’s a fluke! In this area, it’s always Tom Stettner who correctly identifies mysteries.
John’s flower is a stunner, isn’t it?
Unlike you, I may not be above begging John for one.
Now to read up on successfully growing cyclamineus from seed!
