Hi Daffnetters,
The season is finishing quickly as we have had a week of
warm nights and
high humidity. The late daffs are showing fungal spots very
soon after openning
and the vase life is suffering.

Thanks for the photos from the late southern show Trevor;
also the interesting
seedlings, – 3 Y – Y is proving a difficult line to improve
, especially in obtaining
early season flowers.Keep up the good work as you are
younger than most
and time is on your side.

The last show of the season may be at Woodville, this
coming Saturday 15 October.
At our ” late ” show at Wanganui, 2 weeks ago, we all
lamented that we had not
seen any of the fine, very late varieties, particularly the
great Irish charmers.
The only Cape Point seen this season was 5 weeks ago at the
first show of the season.
Bob M said it had been chilled and pot grown to be extra early.
We all agreed that the winter here had been to mild to give
the lates, particularly
the Irish flowers, a necessary chill.
Our weather professionals tell us the same story – most
North Island weather stations
recorded record low numbers of frosts for the winter months,
June, July, August.
One particular station, near Tauranga, for the first time
ever, did not have a ground
frost in this period — a very mild winter.
The test of having the water in a bucket, outside on the
lawn,frozen solid by the frost,
proved the point at my home in Otaki; not a frozen bucket
all winter, about 3 frosts
over the winter that were still around after 10 am. Strange
, as we had our first
snowfall in this area since 1976, mid August.
As we have discussed previously on Daffnet, if we do not
have a good winter chill,
Cape Point and many other proven winners from Brian D. that
may be mid season in
the U K will be very late season in the North Island, N Z.
We are looking forward to Cape Point, many other late pinks
, a handful of bright
rimmed yellow reds.
I suspect that the Waikato growers are also still waiting for
the Irish flowerings and
also some great poets from Max, his Kawhatau is also just
flowering.

We have booked the hall at Woodvile, Home town of Ralph
and Ngaire Mountfort who
have suffered all season in their trips to the Central shows
as the Manawatu Gorge closure
has meant an extra hours travel, over a very windy road, to
show their flowers.
We all agreed that it was only right that we should do the
travelling for the extra late show.

An older late pink that was a good show flower in it,s day.

2 W – P Pensive Guy Wilson pre 1950.

Interesting to note that the famous 2 Y – Y O Fortune ,
is a grand parent.

Looking forward to a friendly, social, late, late show on
Saturday,

Cheers John.
