2011 MDS Bulb Exchange.pdf
Our local society will close out the season on Sunday with the annual meeting and the bulb “exchange.”

We had a very successful bulb sale last weekend and sold almost all the bulbs we had on hand. I had feared that we had “too many” this year, but good weather and the enthusiastic visitors at the Chicago Botanic Garden proved me wrong. At the end of Saturday I thought we would be out of bulbs on Sunday. I was wrong at that, too.

A list of what we sold and a (slightly flawed) composite picture of the over 70 bulbs we had for sale is at our website http://www.MidwestDaffodil.org.

The “exchange” this Sunday is actually a giveaway to our members. We put the bulbs on a table, draw numbers, then walk around the tables in the order just established, taking a bulb each time until they are gone. There are often some other bulbs or plants brought for the pool of plant material to be shared, the bulb list should be enough incentive to come to the meeting. Everyone will go home with bulbs with much more value than the membership fee of $5/year. I wish it were also more of an incentive to chip in at the annual show and sale.

I’m pretty proud of the list this year, much of which is due to Nancy Pilipuf. There are lots of bulbs here which newbies and veterans will be glad to own. The program at the meeting before the giveaway will be a slide show of the bulbs on the table with descriptions, reminiscences, and comments about them offered by whomever wants to comment. There are some on this list which have been Best in Show at our show and probably yours, as well as a few Wister and Pannill winners.

The list is attached in PDF format.

P.S. I hope my number comes up in the first 10 or so. I fancy a number of those fine bulbs.
