46% nitrogen from Urea

Our worst soil on our farm is “across the creek”. This soil had only 1 PPM nitrogen, (needed to add 95 pounds per acre to get to Critical Level) only 8 PPM Phosphorus (needed to add 105 pounds per acre) only 33 PPM Potassium (needed to add 70 pounds of Potassium). In other words almost worthless as far as the Macro nutrients N-P-K. Micro nutrients were good except for Boron. Soil PH of 4.3 so I needed to add 1.4 tons of lime just to get to the minimum requirements. Soil test date of 10-28-2008

OK the photos are reversed but click on the photo properties to see dates. The first photo is March 29 about five weeks AFTER I only added a “handful” of Urea to every 5 or 6 feet of Golden Dawn beds. I left a skip in the beds where you see that “gap” in the blooms!

The second photo was from March 9 I believe. It takes about 2 weeks of warm weather for Urea nitrogen to convert in the soil to a nitrate form that daffodils/plants can absorb. Nitrogen was the ONLY soil additive that I used spring of 2009.

A “little” nitrogen allowed for more leaf growth, which in turn allowed each bulb to convert more sunlight into “food” which produced larger bulbs, more off shoots and this extra dark green color in these bulb tops…..These bulbs had been in the ground for about three years and were dwindling away to NOTHING. Not even grass or weeds would grow in this section of our farm…

I hate to beat soil testing into the ground BUT pretty hard watching 100,000 bulbs just sit there or slowly die out because I was too cheap to get a soil test on that part of the farm:-)) Keith Kridler Mt. Pleasant, Texas
