  1. Ted,
This brings back happy memories of a trip along the El Camino Real with Bill and Rosemary Roese’ en route to Grant Mitsch’s where we found a nice 6Y-Y seedling from Honey Bells x N. cyclamineus. Bill and I bought the stock and Registered it in 1978 as ‘El Camino’ as a reminder of our trip. Alas, away from Canby ‘El Camino’ did not perform as expected and it had a short catalogue life – but it is nice to see it still lives on through this lovely Manuel Matos Lima seedling. I suppose the surprise is that ‘El Camino’ was fertile having been bred from a 21 chromosome triandrus hybrid x a diploid species. Just shows – crazy crosses are worth trying if expectation is not too high.
Now the question – is your lovely seedling fertile with it’s wonderfully mixed pedigree inc. a standard daffodil, N. triandrus, N. cyclamineus and N. viridiflorus? How about now mixing in some Tazettae blood?

  2. Brian,

Lima’s ‘El Camino’ X N. viridiflorus is reported as being pollen fertile.  As my  ‘El Camin’o X N. viridiflorus did not bloom in 2011, this is the first time that I have had the opportunity to harvest pollen which I have frozen for use in the middle of March in my ‘tazetta’ hybridizing program.  My ‘tazetta’ hybridizing to date has mostly involved ‘Bright Spangles’ pollinated with N. jonquilla, N. willkommii, and a few standard cultivars.  I have a number of seedlings that I am growing on, some of which look quite promising.

Best wishes to you and the family for 2012.  I do hope to see you in Baltimore.
