consensus recommendation on what to do with frozen foliage and buds

Hello, all,

I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of consensus recommendation can be made on what to do with frozen foliage and or buds. In short, I live in northern Germany and my RES clumps, which should have been in bloom by now are limp and lying flat on the ground. The foliage is either yellow-brown or whitish-yellow, as are the buds and all absolutely lifeless. This is due to a late (mid-January) winter with temperatures down to minus 10 or 15 degrees Celsius and a snow-cover during that same period. Most of the other daffodils seem to have faired well.

What is the general recommendation?

Leave everything the way it is and let mother nature take care of things?

Cut off the foliage and buds down to soil level?

Pull out foliage and buds with a ferocious snap and hope for the best?

Thanks for your help.

Niels

  1. Neils, when I lived in zone 6 in Maryland, I had this problem a lot. A
wise man told me that the bulbs survive if the frozen foliage does not get a
rot that reaches down to the bulb. It was recommended to give the foliage a
heavy dose of fungicide. I started doing that and they kept coming back the
    next year.

    Hope that helps,
