Bulbocodiums

The issue about how different from others a bulbocodium cultivar must be
to support registration has been around for some time now, apparently
without resolution. I have to think there is reason for the question to
keep coming up. I wonder how many judges there are who, faced with a
collection containing multiple similar bulbocodium cultivars, could
say with confidence that all were correctly labeled, or that any
particular one was not. This is a nightmare for judges and for the
classification folks as well. I wouldn’t dare to judge such an entry;
however, I can say with some confidence, having grown Windy City for 2
seasons and Three Oaks for nine, that they are easily distinguishable
at a glance.
