hardiness of cultivar Little Gem

Hi, everyone,

During the past years, I’ve been planting tiers of different cultivars, trying to get them to show up “on time” and at the right height. Most cultivars are going well. This spring, though, due to a late and hard frost in northern Germany, RES was up early, but nearly all buds froze over. Another problem is Little Gem, which I had planted two autums ago between lavender clumps. Last year, all looked fine. This year, only about 10% of Little Gem is blooming. Why? Does anyone know whether Little Gem has a tendency to go blind after its first season of blossoming? Should I wait and hope that blooms will reappear next spring? I tend to be a bit impatient and am unsure as to what would be best. Any advice?

Best regards,

Niels

  1. Niels,
I have a patch of naturalised ‘Little Gem’ which consistently flowers every season and increases rapidly by bulb. Probably about 40 flowers each year and increasing.
The growing situation is a poor quality piece of garden in full
sun and no watering, although there is some other small plant cover during the peak of summer. I cannot get the ‘Little Gem to flower in a container. This cultivar seems to thrive on neglect for me.
