People allergic to daffodils?

About 15% of people, maybe more will report that they cannot bring a pot of
Tazetta’s in bloom into their homes without someone in the house hold that
will have a severe reaction to the scent of these daffodils. Watering eyes,
severe headaches, trouble breathing are common symptoms!

In pastures and fields and open woodlands domesticated cattle, horses, sheep
and goats will eat various weeds and grasses right up to the leaf stems of
various species and cultivars of daffodils.

Wild pigs or Hogs, deer, ground hogs (large weed eating rodents in the USA),
squirrels, chipmunks, pocket gophers, rabbits, geese and ducks ETC. again
will eat right up to the daffodil foliage. Some will dig up bulbs and move
them but even with all these different digestive tract systems you don’t see
massive animal die offs in large expanses of daffodils:-))

As far as people dying of “daffodil poisoning” this is truly rare. To put
this into perspective just look up how many people get hospitalized and or
die each year from eating Peanuts or some of the other nuts or legumes that
folks are commonly allergic to!~ Also research wild mushrooms or Oleander
bushes for accidental poisonings!

Don’t forget that scientists have “Gene Spliced” daffodil genes into common
rice to create “Golden Rice” thus creating vitamin enriched rice.

They have gene spliced Beta Carotene from the red rims of Poeticus daffodils
into carrots to create enhanced beta carotene carrot strains for use in
making more concentrated vitamins by using less pounds of carrots.

They are extracting Alzheimer treatment drugs from the juice of various
daffodils.

Compare the life expectancy of daffodil breeders world wide historically as
compared to medical doctors! Keith Kridler Mt. Pleasant, Texas

  1. Cindy Haeffner told me that cattle actually eat the leaves-if she plants too close to the fencethe historics do no appear to have that problemgrowing in local pastures

  2. I wanted to ask if anyone else has had deer eating newly sprouted first year from seed – daffodils. We have a deer problem whose amount of damage done has accelerated in the last few years…we really don’t have squirrels or rabbits and the new daffodil sprouts are nipped off at various heights in the rows (darn, I thought the daffodils were deerproof). Any ideas or suggestions! – Sandy

  3. I don’t have a very big problem with deer – with me it’s the squirrels
digging up and tossing newly planted bulbs until I found out about
Milorganite! Try sprinkling it around your daffodil plantings – I’ve
been using it for the last few years and the varmints don’t go near,
so far. I doesn’t smell very much (it’s processed sewage) but whatever
    works is good!

forsythia in bloom a month early and crocuses, snowdrops, aconites all
    popping out!

  4. I have used against rodents TMTD (tetra methyl thiuram disulfide), but it
    now does not produced :(
