Public planting daff vet list

All,

A group is looking to plant daffs in a public planting along side a major highway, so not much in the way of care and lots in the way of not so great conditions.

This is in the Atlanta area, so Zone 7b but by the road maybe closer to 8a, and soil is on the “clay” side. Large scale amending is not financially feasible.

Has anyone tried these cultivars in really sub-optimal conditions and had luck with them lasting more than 1-2 years? :

St. Keverne
Monal
Ceylon
Salome

  1. ‘Monal’ and ‘Ceylon’ are extraordinary naturalizers for us in less than
    ideal conditions. ‘St. Keverne’ for us occasionally up-and-rots, and
    ‘Salome’—though a persistent producer of enormous clumps over
    time-tends to quit flowering if left in the ground too many years,
    producing foliage only (and it’s foliage isn’t that noteworthy). This
    is our experience in STL, MO, and may be radically different in other
    regions.

  2. St. Keverne has been used on roadsides in Bienville Parish, LA and seems to be doing fine. Soil is about 40-50% clay. Salome doesnt do well here. Celia

  3. Sara, I have a large patch of St.
    Keverne out back in unaltered soil (with
    a lot of clay) and with no water other
    than rainfall that is doing well after
    some years here in middle Tennessee. We
    do get a lot of rainfall here though.
    Cheekwood Botanical Gardens has Ceylon
    perennialized over a lot of areas, but
    they have likely ammended the soil and
    provide water for them.
