Baltimore show – Link Award winner

This and the next three posts will be about the ADS award winners in the Challenge section of the national show. The Challenge section has three classes: 3 different cultivars by the hybridizer, 6 by the hybridizer, and 12 by the hybridizer. Note that we refer to “hybridizer” here rather than “originator.” In the ADS scheme of things, the originator is the person who grew the plant to first flowering. The hybridizer (of a cultivar) is the person who made or supervised the making of the cross yielding the seed. Entries in the Challenge section are made in the name of the hybridizer who, if unable to attend the show, can authorize someone else to stage the daffodil (or even grow the daffodils) on her/his behalf. The flowers may be grown in any way deemed appropriate (meaning they can be grown in a green house or glass house). Because the Challenge section rules are very different from the rules for the other sections, blooms in this section are not eligible for any other ADS awards. Incidentally, the Challenge classes do not specify flower size, so an entry can consist of miniatures or a mix of miniatures and standards. In reality, most entries consist of all standards, and occasionally there will be an entry of all miniatures.

The Link Award is for the best entry in the class for 3 by the hybridizer. The flowers in the winning entry are:

98-164-1 3Y-YYO (Small Talk x Proxy) 0026-1 9W-YYR (Verry poet O.P.) 03-N7-2 3W-O (Estrella O.P.)

The hybridizer was Michael Berrigan.
