Chicago Botanic Garden – Midwest Daffodil Show Cancelled

Blooms here are past midseason and there won’t be anything left at the end of the month, as has been apparent for some time. There will be no ADS show for Chicago this year.

We hold out hope that there may be a small display show made up from blooms that will have been refrigerated. And, there could be a design show if the buds being saved now survive so that the interesting themes proposed for this year can actually have some daffs in them.

I’ve been asked, “How long do refrigerated buds last?” I dunno, but the ones from Canada that I see in Trader Joe’s do well. What’s your take on this?

We’ll make a drop dead decision on these items in 10 days, but otherwise no show here.

My reflections on the early season:

I have never had flowers to show for a national show, other than toe 2009 convention here, with one exception. On the morning we left for the St. Louis convention I had one bloom of Peeping Tom, almost always the first to pop, so I had exactly one entry in a national show. All others that I could attend, that’s most except for Pittsburg, saw me arrive equipped to ogle, admire, covet, and dream, but not to compete. So I am the record holder, I believe, for fewest blooms displayed at national conventions by a former President of the ADS. I am not proud of this, but as one ages you take your notoriety where you can get it.

  1. You’ve got lots of company, George. Most of our midwest shows canceled. Here in Cincinnati, we got lucky and moved our show two weeks earlier and our venue was able to accommodate us. I think it goes down as the only show in the area.
