Dutch still life comes to life

I have always viewed the still life portraits of the great Dutch master painters with a certain degree of skepticism, as I could never bring myself to believe that the wide variety of flowers they used could all be in bloom at the same time.

Well, last week we had some poets and late-planted daffs in bloom, a stray tulip (we don’t have many), our tree peonies in full bloom, early herbaceous peonies starting to bloom, and one or two rose bushes starting to bloom. This week the tree peonies are done, but the herbaceous peonies and roses are more in bloom.

Have fun at the convention, and eat some crab cakes and drink a National Bohemian or two for me.

  1. G'day All,

Talk about strange weather, I have a daffodil in bloom as well as ground covers such as alpine phlox and aubretia Several spring flowering shrubs like azaleas, bearded iris have buds and of course bulb foliage popping up everywhere, the roses look spectacular, of course the dahlias all dropped last week with the first frost and we are only in the first weeks of autumn or fall as the northerners all call it. I picked flowers for table decoration and used about 15 varieties, sorry I didn't take any photos.

    Hello Mike,

Strange temperatures are sometimes responsible for important shifts in
flowering time – but it is well known that the Dutch painters deliberately
assembled in their bouquets many different flowers, which did not blossom at
    the same time.

  2. Here in middle TN magnolias, bearded iris and miniature roses are in bloom. Azaleas, dogwood, and redbud are long gone. Mountain laurel and rhododendron are just opening, along with a few Flanders poppies, lots of Bachelor's buttons (cornflower), and just a few daffodils (late planted) are still look pretty decent, but not good enough to cut and take to Baltimore tomorrow! We'll miss all of you who won't be with us there at the convention!
