Thanks to those who replied privately about the necessity of having import permits. The concensus seems to be that it is not necessary, and that perhaps the Aussie inspector was being overly careful. I’ve forward all your information to my friend.

I recently had to renew my permit, and it’s good for 5 years. It takes 3-4 weeks. Then you’ll be prepared should anyone ask for your permit number.
