London Olympics – the new Bond girl – no daffodils in sight

Ian, I didn’t get into your contest, but I hope you have many participants. I watched the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremonies last night and must say that the Queen and Daniel Craig stole the whole show, with the Corgies a close second. I was so intrigued, I went searching this morning to learn more, and wanted to watch the entire sequence again. I understand the IOC has rights to the video and you can’t view it on line. I was shocked when it was really the Queen, turning around to greet “Mr. Bond”. But I was “gobsmacked” when Her Majesty bailed out of the chopper! I didn’t see that one coming. I figured they were just going to land on top of the Olympic Stadium, or something similar. It took me a few seconds to gather my wits about me, and to realize it had to be a stunt double. Obviously, I need to master the art of, “Keep Calm and Carry On”. I was most impressed… and think the Queen is really enjoying her senior years. You go girl! But I still want to know what is in that purse. And here is a heads up for those coming to the upcoming ADS Fall Board meeting and symposium in Nashville… I am so impressed with Queen Elizabeth II, I have decided I will be in costume as her on FRI night. Get ready!

  1. Dear All,

I’m not sure whether I’m qualified to be spokesperson for the whole of Great Britain let alone England! I know many who would /are shuddering at the thought!
But I work with Big Wigs everyday and never get into any trouble, well not much!
But thank you all for you kind comments about the London 2012 Olympics and the opening ceremony, I hope you all enjoy the events as they unfold.
Jaydee ask the question ” What does Her Majesty the Queen carry in her handbag/purse!”
Well I gave up years ago trying to work out what lady’s carry in them as it seem to be a matter of personal taste or requirement.
What I do know however is that the Queen does not carry money!
With that in mind Jaydee you could be in for a cheap night at the Fall Board Meeting!
    My Best wishes to ALL
    Humble Servant,
    Ian

  2. HI Jaydee and also Ian and the rest of our friends in England,
There was a brief shot of daffodils at the very beginning of the ceremony.  It was a shot of London Bridge, I believe,  and there were some daffodils in the front left.  Naturally these were shots taken earlier since no daffs would be in sight at this time.  It was in the run up prior to the start.
It was a marvelous and charming presentation.  I thought it was wonderfully British and I could have imagined my British friends enjoying it as much as the people who were there in the stadium, as well as watching it on TV and on the telly.  I loved the progression of the history of England to the present in that perfectly choreographed pageant.
I thought it was nice that the producers included boxing great Muhammad Ali in the torch lighting ceremony.
I wish I could have been there, too.

Q: What does Queen Elizabeth keep in her purse??
A: She uses it as a prop,as a way to keep her hands busy.Inside her bag are her glasses,a handkerchief, good luck charms from her grandchildren, sometimes her cell phone and money for church collections and any speeches that she will make. She also has a small compact and lipstick inside the bag.
    Here’s a story about what’s in the Queen’s bag:
“In their book ‘What’s In The Queen’s Handbag: And Other Royal Secrets’, Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton give a look into what all the Queen carries around.

And, they say that it’s not only what’s inside the monarch’s bags that is significant, but the bag itself, for she uses it to communicate with her staff in a very subtle manner.

According to the authors, one thing that can always be found in the Queen’s handbags is an S-shaped metal meat hook that she places on the dinner table’s edge to suspend her bag from so that it doesn’t touch the floor.

Also to be found inside is a collection of good luck charms, including miniature dogs, horses, saddles and horsewhips – most of them gifts from her children, reports the Daily Express.

Family photos are also present, the most treasured of which is a snap of Prince Andrew, from when he returned from the Falklands in 1982.

Other things that the Queen never goes without are her mints, chocolate drops for her beloved corgis and a couple of crosswords, which her servants snip out of the papers for her.

Also ever present is the metal make-up case, made by Prince Philip and presented to her as a wedding gift 60 years ago.

And if there’s still room in the bag she happens to be carrying, the Queen slips in a camera to take snaps to add to her private collection.

Dampier and Walton also reveal the other uses of the monarch’s bag.

Before dining with the Queen, a point is made to inform guests that dinner will end in about five minutes after she places her bag on the table top.

On walk¬abouts, she holds the bag to one side to show she intends to move on, at which point a lady-in-waiting joins the conversation, allowing her to slip away without causing offence.

When at a banquet, if the Queen’s bag is placed on the floor, then it’s a sign that she’s not finding the conversation interesting, and wants nothing more than to escape. However, if the royal bag is dangling happily from the crook of her left arm, she is happy and relaxed.

‘What’s In The Queen’s Handbag: And Other Royal Secrets’ will be published on October 15 in the UK. (ANI)”

  7. This from The Guardian:

“Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen: the Woman behind the Throne, claims that the famous handbag contains spectacles, mint lozenges and a fountain pen but rarely cash other than a note for the collection plate on Sundays. And a long-serving member of staff adds that the bag also contains a compact and lipstick, Kleenex and a comb. In addition there is supposedly a portable hook with suction cap so that HM can hang her bag discreetly under tables”
