an inquiry asking for help

Friends, an ADS member in Canada contacted me to ask for help on resources about daffodil hybridizing (how do you do it, etc.) for a PowerPoint presentation he is to present in SEP. Unless I am overlooking something, I have come to realize that ADS does not have much material that would be of help to him. So to those of you that enjoy helping to create our many educational resources, I believe we have a void. In the meantime, if anyone has thoughts for resources that could be utilized, please let me know. Here is what I responded to the member with:

ADS has many CD and DVD programs, but after looking over the listing, I see we have nothing of help to you. I will have to bring that to the attention of our group of people that enjoy volunteering their time to produce our many educational resource materials. I would encourage you to look at the ADS website, daffodilusa.org… under the resources section and see if you find info that might be helpful to you. I didn’t see much but you may feel differently. Our Daffodil Journal, the first 40 years, is available on a DVD from ADS for $40. It is searchable and there are articles on hybridizing to be found there. But it would be time consuming to search and look for these. One of the best presentations I remember from the many ADS National Conventions I’ve been to, was about 30 years ago and was on how to hybridize. It was impressive and it was printed in The Daffodil Journal shortly thereafter. I could hunt that down and scan it and email it to you. You could also consider utilizing DaffSeek, daffseek.org, as a way of showing the progression of hybrids. Our ADS listserver, DaffNet, daffnet.org, could be searched. I did so quickly and didn’t find a lot of help, relevant to your needs. I will post out a request for any ideas of resources I am overlooking or forgetting about and see what sort of responses I get back.

If you have any ideas or thoughts for this member, please let me know.

  1. Jaydee, this file might be of some help. It details the parts of the daffodil, has a reference to pollination and includes some closeup photos. All the photos are mine and I’m fine with them being used for educational purposes. The member can contact me if they want higher resolution images.

You might also reference the ADS banner on How do Daffodils Grow?.  “Details the steps needed to produce a new flower from pollination to flowering bulb.”

You are right, though, we have had so much more information on pollinating daffodils presented in seminars and I would think in Journal articles as well, but it would be an excellent PowerPoint or media project.

    Thanks,
    Becky

  2. Jaydee,

Kirby and I did a photo/journal article on hybridising, published in the journal about December 2007 or March 2008. Loyce, or more likely Kirby, may still have the original photos and text.

For reader’s information, I expect the first flowers from the cross this year.

    Dave
