Ref. 13/98A

Hello Daffnetters,

This miniature was raised here from seed sent to me by Lawrence Trevanion in 1998. My records read:
Fernandesii JWB 86-03 x cordubensis

I had six cultivars flower from the cross and have retained two. The one illustrated is a richly coloured yellow with a very attractive scalloped corona.  The other one I kept is a nicely rounded miniature flower with a more conventional jonquilla cupped corona.  The two I have kept self seed very easilly and I have a later generation (7/03 from 13/98 self pollinated) which is a very well formed free flowering miniature.

The genetic trait that gives the even scalloping of the corona in some species must be quite ancient as it is to be found also in viridiflorus.

These are the only miniature daffodils I have raised from seed, thanks to the generosity of Lawrence.

Cheers,
John

  1. Hi John,

It looks nice and is early too, I assume. The Emerald Sea pollen you sent worked a treat on Limequilla so I’m pleased you have received something worthwhile from me. The cross is exactly as I have written it here. Unfortunately I haven’t photos of either parent. It is fairly certain that the cordubensis is MS434 Ubrique Spain. I’m guessing I didn’t maintain this information because it was the only collection I had at the time. I have given away plenty of seed of John Blanchard’s cordubensis. It too is early and scalloped. He has collected some really nice things.

    Lawrence
