Small 10W-W

This is V07-82-2 a 10W-W from: N. b. tenuifolius x N. c. foliosus. First photo shows two early clones. The second shows the -2 clone which is the nicest overall early clone. The last photo (out of focus) shows the -2 clone with ruler.

The corona diameter of the-2 clone is 17mm. The grex is more creamy in color and less glistening white than the previous “very small 1oW-W” posting. The flowers are about half the size of N. cantabricus foliosus and about 25% larger than N. bulbocodium tenuifolius.

There are more buds coming on the -2 clone. I have hopes that this will make a nice, early show, Miniature bulbocodium.

  1. Steve,

Based on the last two years with a “no winter” weather, I’m looking for later blooms that can be used for the show season.  Strangely, my N. cantabricus foliosus hasn’t bloomed.  Usually it is one of the first.  Foliage is up but so far no bloom.  I’m getting buds from some of my early standards, but my R.E.S. is just breaking the ground.  It is a strange year for daffodils when ‘Monal’ beats R.E. S our the the ground: meaning daffodil weather, as usual.

  2. Hi Clay,

One of the wonderful reasons (among MANY wonderful reasons) to raise bulbocodiums from seed is the tremendous diversity of bloom timing of the resulting seedlings. You are assembling a really good collection of superb species and hybrids. Raise as many bulbs as you can from seed obtained from the fine things you are growing. In your great climate you’ll have things blooming from autumn until late spring!

  3. Steve,

You are correct. I have a number of bulbocodium as well as jonquill seedlings in the pipeline, but honestly, I do try for the later ones.  I like to show them, but I still love to look at the early ones as they remind me that spring will be here.  If only we are willing to wait. :-)
