1w-o standard daffodils

Dr John Reed of Oakwood Daffodils is surely making progress in his quest of the elusive 1w-o daffodil. Carefully researched and thoughtout crosses are producing outstanding results. Below are some named and numbered ones bloming in Southaven MS. Certainly Mississippi is not known for outstanding color in daffodils but these are very colorful. Congratulations Dr Reed.

Millennium Orange

Next is Damn Good, John’s first thought when seen in bloom. If selected for registration and naming  this will probably be it’s name.

Damn Good

Next are a couple of numbered selections that I am enjoying also.

  1. Larry,

Many thanks for this posting and photos! John is certainly a frontrunner in 1W-O’s and 1W-R’s as your photos clearly demonstrate. John really deserves accolades.

My experience has been that the seeming “linkage” between true trumpet length and color has been a tough one to overcome. I can get the color in less than trumpet but as soon as I hit equal to or greater than in trumpet length, the color value goes down to 25% or less.

Harold has said that once the linkage is broken by a flower or two, we’ll all be off to the races. John has been able to overcome that issue! I really understand how much went into creating the flowers in your photos. Way to go John!!!!

Larry, thanks again for the post.

  2. Wow, progress indeed, the colour  in Millenium Orange is stunning and the form is good too, thanks for showing us what is being achieved.

  3. I must agree totally with Stephen. Each of the blooms are stunning and the w-o is something for all to aim towards. Well done John and thank you Larry for the post.

  4. Graham Phillips from New Zealand is currently visiting the U.S. and was at the Murphys daffodil show this past weekend. At the Saturday evening dinner he asked if he could have the pollen from one of the flowers I exhibited.  I asked, ‘the Millennium Orange?”  “Yes”  So even though I’m not a hybridizer, I recognized the remarkable advance that “Millennium Orange” represents.  (Yes, I let him have the anthers.)  If you go back to the posting “2013 Murphys Show – Standard Multiple-Cultivar Awards” you can see it in the third row from the bottom, third flower from the left in the Quinn collection.

  5. Everyone should see Johns “Tangerine Delight” as photographed by Jason on Daffseek. So far, from what I see, that is the best 1W-O that has been promoted so far.
