The 2013 Livermore Daffodil Show was March 2 and 3 at Alden Lane Nursery. Though the show was early and the season late, more than 900 stems appeared to make a very respectable showing. I will post the winners of ADS awards with three separate postings. This one is of awards for standard daffodils with a single cultivar in the exhibit. Other postings will be of miniatures and of standard exhibits consisting of multiple cultivars.
The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the historic and container classes. The winner was ‘Ivory Yellow’ 2Y-Y exhibited by yours truly. This was the name that John Reed applied for, but the RHS said there was already a cultivar of this name. We don’t know what the registered name will be, but we hope it will be known by the time the September Daffodil Journal with all the show reports goes to press. I don’t how well the picture shows it, but the perianth is pale yellow.
The White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 standard daffodils in the show excluding the historic classes. The winner was Bob Spotts’ seedling 13-1-3 1Y-Y. The parentage is (‘Wild Women’ x seedling) x seedling.
The Rose Ribbon is for the best standard seedling in the show excluding the container classes. The winner was Bob Spotts’ seedling 13-1-36 2W-O. The parentage is ‘Orange Supreme’ x (‘El Camino’ x N. viridiflorus).
The Small Grower Ribbon is for the best (standard) bloom in the Small Grower Section. This is a section for exhibitors who grow 50 or fewer cultivars. The winner was ‘Erlicheer’ 4W-Y exhibited by Gary Soto.
The Youth Best Bloom was ‘Miss Primm’ 2Y-Y exhibited by Nick Swanson.
The Youth 3 Stems Ribbon was awarded to ‘Erlicheer’ 4W-Y exhibited by Amanda Stear.
The best bloom in the Classics Section was ‘Ceylon’ 2Y-O (1943) exhibited by yours truly.
As distinct from the best bloom in the Classics Section, there is an award for the best single stem exhibit in the Classics Section. (The best bloom might be in a set of 3 or in a collection.) The best single stem exhibit was ‘Daydream’ 2Y-W (1960) exhibited by yours truly.
The best set of 3 in the Classics Section was also ‘Ceylon’ 2Y-O (1943) exhibited by yours truly. The flower on the left was judged the best bloom in the Classics Section.
The best bloom in the Historic Section was ‘Erlicheer’ 4W-Y (1934) exhibited by Bob Spotts. It was the middle bloom in his exhibit of 3 that was also the best set of 3 in the Historic Section.
The best set of 3 in the Historic Section was ‘Erlicheer’ 4W-Y (1934) exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The best bloom in the Intermediate Sections was ‘Bonnie’s Jewel’ 2Y-YOO exhibited by yours truly.
The best set of 3 in the Intermediate Section was also ‘Bonnie’s Jewel’ 2Y-YOO exhibited by yours truly. The best intermediate bloom is the one on the left of this exhibit.
The best container of standard daffodils was ‘Cornish Chuckles’ 12Y-Y exhibited by yours truly. There’s some question as to whether this is really ‘Cornish Chuckles’ or a sibling. As I got this from a mass marketer, there’s no way to know if a substitute cultivar was supplied.
Lovely collection of photos to remind us all why we’re replanting our bulbs down under. Thankyou Kirby.
