2013 Southwest Ohio Daffodil Society show

Good morning all. I’ m very busy for the convention so have very little time to work on photos, BUT I have put some photos of the SWODS show on my Facebook page for those of you who would like to see them.

with a rather surprising result, the Gold ribbon winner was a quite large specimen of Maria Pia 11a Y-R

Happy Thursday!

  1. Tom will post the remaining photos as his time permits, but I just wanted to tell you a little about our show this year.  We were in a new venue, which turned out to be perfect for our small show.  There is room to expand, however, for another year.  The discussion while were setting up on Friday confirmed that the few flowers locally would probably fit on one table, without any trouble!  So we came up with a Plan B.  Each of us brought whatever spring flowers were blooming in our gardens.  I know overseas shows routinely include other plants, but not in the U.S.  We had quite a few hellebores, scillas, pushkinia libanotica, one early leucojum and one late galanthus, just a display, not a competition. And a pot of ranunculus.  We hadn’t planned a photo section, but several of us have photos we’ve shown before, so we thought we’d bring them in case the place looked empty.

As it turned out, our friends Mike and Lisa Kuduk came up from Kentucky, Kathleen Simpson came from West Virginia, and Sara Kinne came from Indiana,  And they all brought lots of blooms.  It was a small show, I heard someone say we had about 300 blooms, but it was a nice show.  We had a great time and lots of visitors.  Ted and Susan Ruoff prepared a great lunch for everyone.

We probably didn’t need Plan B, but we got lots of questions about the other spring flowers, so we may do that again next year.  George McGowan had printed out photos from his and Kathy’s trip to New Zealand last fall, and that got lots of interest, too.

So, thanks to all who brought flowers and contributed to the good time which was had by all.

  2. I’ve been hoping for two days to hear something about the Cincinnati show, and this posting of Mary lou’s was delightful. I was really impressed by the New Zealand shows, both large and small, which included many other seasonal plants. And knowing George’s pictures, you got a real Kiwi experience. (remember that full-page shot of ‘Bannockburn’ in the December Journal.) And your out of state visitors proved what CMDS has always believed, “Somebody always comes.” What a nice jump-start for the convention.

  3. Mike and I had a great time seeing friends.  We enjoyed the new venue (and the fantastic lunch.)  I sort of missed the peacocks at the zoo, but this location is easier to get to and we had a lot more people, so I think it’s a clear winner.  I heard a lot of comments about the other flowers, especially the hellebores.

I brought stuff that never makes it out of the yard, including psuedonarcissus and Spellbinder (didn’t quite sink to Ice Follies, but it was close.)  The picking philosophy was “if the stem isn’t broken and it’ll open by tomorrow, grab it!”

Quite a contrast today.  After 5 days of unseasonably warm weather, I’ve got way more in bloom now than I can pick or haul, never mind stage!  Looking forward to this weekend.
