John Reed’s Collection of 5 won 4 National Ribbons

closeup Reed 4 ribbonAt the recent Midwest Daffodil Show held at the Chicago Botanic garden, John Reed had one of his collections of 5 win the Red-White-and Blue, the Purple, the Rose Ribbon for his seedling 98-14-1 (first row left) as well as the Best in Show for his seedling 98-180-2009. Attached (I hope) are the photos. Congratulations, John!

  1. Congratulations, John, what a stunning set of flowers!

Am I the only person puzzled that one of his seedlings won the Rose Ribbon (best seedling by raiser) yet a different one of his seedlings won the Best-in-Show?

  2. Not at all.  I think if a seedling exhibited by the raiser wins the Best in Show, by definition it should have also won the Rose ribbon.

  3. SO Beth, can you tell me which cultivar name goes with which flower?

    John

  4. The top middle bloom, Dingus Day, has amazing colour.  What a beautiful collection!  Congratulations John.

  5. All,

The upper middle flower labeled ‘Dingus Day’ is incorrect.  ‘Dingus Day’ is a rich pink of more trumpet proportions.  A label must have been switched between Niles and Chicago.

The flower pictured is a new seedling that is superb.   I just returned from four days at Oakwood and this flower impressed me tremendously.

    Thanks for posting this, Beth!

  6. Jason is right, the bloom that won Best in Show for Chicago is not ‘Dingus Day’ (although that is a lovely pink cupped flower). The winner was misidentified and is really Reed seedling 98-180-2009. The mistake was not discovered until after the show, so Reed seedling 98-14-1 (left front in the photo) got the rose ribbon. The entire set of names (to answer John Beck’s question) is:  Back Row left, ‘Pink Climax’ 2Y-P; middle (best in show) is 98-180-2009 , and right stem is not registered but will be called ‘Ramalla’, a 1Y-Y. The two in the front are Reed 98-14-1, a 2Y-R that got the rose ribbon, and on the right is ‘Fort Mitchell’ 1Y-Y. Sorry for the confusion.
