MDS Show in Glencoe (Chicago) This Weekend

Surprise!! The show is on!!!

After all the plans for aborting the show that were made last Sunday, Nancy Pilipuf and I huddled yesterday and decided that we have enough blooms, few very distinguished, to front a small show for the Midwest Daffodil Society this weekend, as scheduled. And, some of our regulars who had nothing on Sunday will have a few, as well. Together we will pull off a good display for those who wander in at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Moreover, we think Beth Holbrooke will be bringing some from her yard in St. Louis from varieties that we won’t see here for two or three weeks. And, we may make a visit to other nearby gardens to shore up the number of entries. Thus, we will avoid two successive cancellations, one for flowers too early and one for blooms too late. That would have been an unenviable record.

If you are within a reasonable distance, plan to drop in, especially if you have a bloom or two. A Throckmorton would be nice, but we’d be glad to see a nice vase of three.

The show schedule is posted on the website, http://MidwestDaffodil.org.

You should be able to talk your way into the Garden by citing that you are entering blooms in the show or that you are helping set up the show. Or, show your membership card in one of the many gardens with reciprocal privileges.

Fire off any questions by phone or email. And, hope for a sudden warm spell tomorrow and Friday in the Chicago area.

BTW, the Peeping Tom in bud I posted here on March 29 still hasn’t bloomed. Jetfire, Tete a Tete, Mite, a couple of common 11’s, and a jonquil or two are about it, aside from many 2 Y-Y’s, mostly uninteresting. The most vigorous, though, are two of John Reed’s golden trumpets, Chicago Gold and Chicago Gold Coast. Seems fitting. The temp was 32 last night but got into the low 50’s today and will be 66 on Friday. Of course, we’ll have oodles of blooms next week.

  1. And if you have some blooms in 3 weeks, which seems likely for some folks, please consider making a trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota!  If you want details about our show (new dates May 18-19), please see http://www.daffodilmn.org.  Or contact me at title=.  Hope to see some Chicago and northern Illinois folks in Minneapolis!
