Sometimes things fall between the cracks.

The Brian and Betty Duncan medal for innovation was awarded at the recent Columbus Convention but somehow was never mentioned or acknowledged. For a while Marilyn Howe and myself were unsure which flower actually got the award but Naomi Ligget confirmed that it was one of the two miniature double daffodils in our premier collection.  So I thought I might toot my own horn and show a picture of the winning flower. I am sure that Brian Duncan,  at least, would be interesting in seeing which flower was the winner. This flower was bred from  a large white Jackson double ‘Kidson’ by a very small N. dubius. There were 30 seeds from which 20 two-year old bulblets were planted out. Kidson usually has a stigma but after the first pod I was never able to get another despite probably pollinating over two dozen flowers. From the first cross made in 2008, we have flowered out eight doubles which were all small enough to be considered miniatures. The rest were singles with usually 3 florets to the stem but nothing much to recommend them. Several of the double siblings were displayed at the Livermore show, this year.
