Identifing and storing daffodil seeds

Bill,

You should have been at the convention, I covered the storing of seeds in my presentation, at least how I do it. Am creating a new post, as I need to include a couple of photos.

I collect the seeds in Ziploc snack bags(6.5 x 3.25 inches) you can get 100 for around 3.00 and they can be used for several years. As I collect the seed, I write the cross on the bag with a Sharpie. Simply rub off the cross with a wet rag for use the next year. I have some plastic cups in a common cardboard box that I pour out the seed in, keeping the baggie with each individual cross. Let the seed dry in the cup for several days some where in your home or garage, rebag the seed and store until you get a chance to plant. They will keep fine and won’t mold or mildew. It is important to dry them out in the cups for storage in the plastic bags.  Have been doing this for a number of years, have had no problems, the seed germinate fine. It works for me. convention presentation 024 convention presentation 013

  1. I use recycled lunch or fast food bags clean and dry.  to store the pods once they are picked.  I pick them at 6-8 weeks depending on the dryness of the year and the amount of sun.  I go through the trouble of sorting out the seeds and placing them in coin envelopes to sort them before planting.  I used to plant the smallest numbers first but as time limited my prep time, and the process was drawn out over several weeks the past couple of years, I plant the largest and favorite crosses first.  They germinate better and generally do better than the later planted stuff.  In short pods in a paper sack, seeds in an envelope.  I reuse the bags if they are sound.  They are a motley crew
