2007/06 Snipe x N cyclamineus

We have seen a number of photos of Div 6 hybrids from Canberra. Here is my version of the same. I am thrilled that most of the bulbs have multiplied and there are two or three flowers on each clone. Maybe they will be keepers. They are growing in a shaded poly box under the shelf of other miniature pots.

I note that Graham talks about Intermediate Div 6’s. This is music to my ears. Some of these cultivars are too big to be miniatures and have perfect form. They could not compete against the likes of Rapture or Trena because they would be considered too small. I wonder when the powers that be will see that there is a place for Div 6 in the Intermediate section of our shows.

  1. Hi Dave,

Regarding intermediate div.6 I think the situation is a little more complicated because there is the possibility of larger div.6’s than are currently shown.

My feeling is that judging has moved in favor of smaller div.5’s because grace is given a higher priority, whereas in div.6 smoothness and substance is given a higher priority, which favors triploids/tetraploids (typically larger flowers). If tetraploids invade the miniature classes it won’t just be the slightly larger than miniature flowers that are uncompetitive on the show bench.

Div. 9 poses a similar similar problem to div 6. Given that div1-3, 6 and 9 are genetically related I would be concerned about adopting different standards for ‘standard’ and ‘intermediate’ in those divisions. And since there is great variation in size in division 7 and 8 and 10, it seems to me societies could provide for 3 size groupings, large, medium and small in all divisions. That said, there should be a manageable number of classes in a show and continually adding classes is not sensible. If we add we will probably also need to take away.
