On a cloudy but warm Saturday 5 October , the Central Daffodil held their late show in the Whanganui City College Hall .A good ,big venue , well lit and good facilities ,we were missing regulars John Hollever , Sue Scott and Wilf Hall but a smaller number of growers managed to stage about 300 blooms .John sent through a large box of good blooms and these were well staged by Brian and others .Panel judging went well and just over 20 blooms made a good top table of good quality premiers but with no absolute standout champion . In a close finish , Wayne Hughes , our host for the day , was awarded Champion Bloom with his own raising , SANDMERE GOLD , 2 Y – Y . This very gold and very flat large cup is amassing a good show record in the last few seasons .
Reserve Champion , in a split decision ,was an unknown POET 9 W – GYR , a very round , small neat flower with a sparkling white perianth ,grown by John Hollever
Premier yellow trumpet was a Wayne Hughes seedling , W H 98 – 32 , a sister seedling to the Champion Bloom .
ELMBRIDGE , 1 w – y , was prem bicolour trumpet .It was a very well contrasted flower ,with a classical trumpet roll, the best seen of this variety for many seasons .
PINK TOPAZ , a trumpet that Wayne grows well , gave Wayne a clean sweep of trumpet premiers and told us that his season is just a little later than the Kapiti and Horowhenua growers .
Wayne also had prem redcup with another seedling , W H 99 – 14 , a big , bright flower .
Brogden Bulbs , Spud and Joy , presented a nice seedling ,B B 01 – 23 – 1 to win 2 Y – P premier with a smaller , very neat bloom .
John Hollever had a nice ALTUN HA to take reverse bicolour prem .
MODULUX was 2W – Y prem for John Hollever .
The best of many TANSEY GIRL in the show was prem 2 W – O for Brogden Bulbs.
Spud had a very attractive NEWSFLASH seedling BB 01 – 22 – 7 ,to win the 2 w – p prem , beating some larger Cape Points .
Wayne had another prem with his own CRYSTAL GEM , 2W – W,one of several nice examples he presented .
