The Livermore daffodil show was March 1 and 2 at Alden Lane Nursery. The Northern California Daffodil Society is fortunate that this is a locally owned and operated nursery that supports local gardening activities such as our daffodil show. NCDS has had shows at other venues in the past. Our association with Alden Lane Nursery was a result of late member Wayne Steele knowing Jack and Ruth Williams who established the nursery and their daughter Jacquie who now owns the nursery. It has been a mutually beneficial association.
Anyway, this is the first of three posts I’ll make about this year’s show. In this post I’ll cover the ADS awards for standard daffodils that involve only a single cultivar. We had 300 entries (yes, it came out to exactly 300 when I counted them) by 14 exhibitors with a total stem count of 769. Bob Spotts was winner of the Silver Ribbon with 45 blues.
Winner of the Gold and Rose Ribbons was Bob Spotts’ seedling 1-1-61 1Y-Y. The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the container section. The Rose Ribbon is for the best standard seedling in the show excluding the container section. Notice that the ADS now allows standards in the Historic Section to be eligible for the Gold Ribbon. An historic daffodil is not likely to be the best in the show, but the rules are now simpler.
The White Ribbon is for the best set of three standards. The winner is ‘Mesquite’ 2Y-Y exhibited by Bob Spotts.
Nick Swanson had the best set of 3 in the Youth Section. The flower on the right was the best bloom in the Youth Section. The cultivar is ‘Cotinga’ 6W-P.
The Small Grower Section is for exhibitors who grow 50 or fewer cultivars. The winners was ‘Nicole’s Favorite’ 8W-Y exhibited by Anna Fine.
Steve Hampson exhibited the best bloom in the Historic Section. It’s ‘Cragford’ 8W-O (1930).
The best set of 3 in the Historic Section was ‘Erlicheer’ 4W-Y exhibited by Ben Blake and Nancy Tackett.
There is an award for the best single stem exhibit in the Classics Section and an award for best bloom in the Classics Section. This stem of ‘Avalanche’ 8W-Y (1955) won both. Rosemay Scholz was the exhibitor.
The best intermediate is selected from the Intermediate Section and certain standard collections. The winner was ‘April Joy’ 2YYW-W exhibited by Steve Hampson.
Winner of the award for best set of 3 intermediates was Bob Spotts’ seedling 1-1-123 3Y-YYO.
We had about 6 entries in the class for standards grown and shown in a container. Winner was ‘Kokopelli’ 7Y-Y exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The award for the best container of species went to N. henriquesii 13Y-Y exhibited by Melissa Reading.
That’s all for now. I’ll continue with the standard collection awards and miniature daffodil awards tomorrow.
Congratulations to Bob Spotts for receiving the Gold and Rose Ribbon for this beautiful seedling! A hardy congratulations to all the top winners at the Livermore Daffodil Show.
A BIG THANK YOU to Kirby Fong for organizing this wonderful Daffodil Show, and posting his gorgeous daffodil photos and show results for us!
