Winter Blooms in Oakley

Oakley is 500 miles northwest of Harold Koopowitz’ home in Southern California – but our climates are similar. To say the least, the winter weather here has been unusual. Frost in the morning, high 60s to low 70s F in the afternoon – since early December. Viridiflorus hybrid seedlings are advanced by about two to three weeks from normal. Here are some currently in bloom.

An attractive intermediate: Magic Moment x (Actaea x viridiflorus)

Magic Moment x (Actaea x viridiflorus)oment

Small, attractive plant with multiple florets:  Emerald Sea x Lima 12W-G lobed seedling.

Emerald Sea x Lima 7W-G lobed seedling

Spikey, clustered Lima viridiflorus seedling from unknown seed parent.

Lima seedling unkown parentage

(Actaea x viridiflorus) x Emerald Sea.

(Actaea x viridiflorus) x Emerald Sea

One of several clones of Harold Koopowitz’ Habit x Emerald Sea. Blooms of the various clones range from 70mm to 85mm. Long lasting – has been open two weeks. Surely the best cultivar in my winter garden and worth registering.

Habit x Emerald Sea

(Easter Moon x viridiflorus) x Emerald Sea. Vigorous here unlike its seed parent (a Lima seedling) which doesn’t grow well here. (It’s growing at the base of a rose bush – so it gets watered throughout the year.)
