The Fortuna show is sponsored by the Fortuna Garden Club at Riverlodge overlooking the Eel River. Fortuna is about a five or six hour drive north of San Francisco and is several miles inland from the ocean. The season was a bit early this year so that exhibitors did not have a lot of flowers left. 29 exhibitors put in 207 entries with a total of 367 stems. Many of us brought flowers that were past their peak in order to have a respectable size show. This is a show that also includes artistic designs, and this year the number of design entries by youths outnumbered the design entries by adults. In this post, I’ll cover the ADS awards for exhibits involving one cultivar of a standard daffodil.
The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the Container Section. The winner was seedling 2-333-14 2W-YOO exhibited by Bob Spotts. This was also the winner of the Rose Ribbon for the best standard seedling originated by its exhibitor.
The White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 standards in the show. The winner was 2-333-14 2W-YOO exhibited by Bob Spotts. The flower on the left won the Gold and Rose Ribbons.
The ribbon for the best bloom in the Youth Section went to ‘Lavalier’ 5YYW-W exhibited by Clare Wilson.
The best 3-stem exhibit in the Youth Section was ‘Chinita’ 8Y-YYR. The exhibitor was Clare Wilson. Clare is Nancy Wilson’s granddaughter.
The best bloom in the Small Grower Section went to ‘Chaste’ 1W-W exhibited by Betsy Stanfield. The Small Grower Section is for exhibitors who grow no more than 50 cultivars.
The best bloom in the Historic Section was ‘Dreamlight’ 3W-GWR (1934) exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The best 3-stem exhibit in the Historic Section was ‘Dreamlight’ 3W-GWR (1934) exhibited by Bob Spotts. The flower on the right was the best bloom in the section.
In the Classic Section there is a ribbon for the best single stem exhibit and a ribbon for the best stem in the section. This flower won both ribbons. It’s ‘Melody Lane’ 2W-P (1962) exhibited by Betsy Stanfield.
The best 3-stem entry in the Classic Section was ‘Tahiti’4Y-O (1956) exhibited by Susan O’Hara.
The best intermediate bloom was ‘Pogo’ 3W-GYO exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The best 3-stem entry in the Intermediate Section was ‘Harpsichord’ 11aY-P exhibited by Bob Spotts.
There were three entries of standards in the Container Section. Each container had only one bloom, so none of them were what we’d call “floriferous.” The best entry was ‘Tahiti’ 4Y-O by Misty Calvo.
This design won second place in its class, but I include this photo because it was the tallest entry in the Youth design section. I’m told the rules specify a maximum width (left to right) and depth (front to back) but no height limit.
Thank you Kirby for sharing your fabulous photos and show results from the daffodil show held in Fortuna, CA last weekend. We really appreciate your hard work with processing all this information.
Thanks again…Lynn Slackman
