The first is a new red cupped poet that has taken six years to bloom. It has the late Sir Frank Harrison’s much liked ‘Red Hugh’ on both sides of its parentage. Diameter is about 63mm or about 2 1/2″.
I’ve always admired Sir Frank Harrison’s ‘Moyle’. This seedling looks close but is about a week or ten days earlier with a more prominent green eye. I think it is striking.
This is a split corona poet. It is not slug damage or a seasonal aberration. I have posted photos of this in previous years. The problem is that it is not stable or consistent. Some years the split corona lays back in three fat, squat “T’s”, other seasons there has been no cup or just vestigial wisps of a corona. This year the main stems gave six coronal segments which laid back flat. Not a show flower (except for one year) but a most intriguing flower for hybridizing.
Two very nice poets Steve, I really love that RED cupped one. Thanks so much for posting.
I have had similar poet seedlings like the other one you posted. Some with practically no corona at all. Don’t know what causes that. Guess it’s just in the genes.
