Ian Dyson has passed

Ian Dyson died suddenly on the morning of the 16th June after planting some of the last of his daffodils for this season. He had been troubled recently with heart problems and was seeing his cardiologist. He had a triple bypass about 15 years ago.

I have known Ian since 1985 when he sought my advice on potting media and other Nursery related stuff. Ian’s enquiring mind has tested me ever since. Like all people who share a long friendship we often knew what the other was thinking or wanted with out saying anything. He was a stalwart of all things bulbous and particularly daffodils in this country and his enthusiasm glued other interested people together. We were planning to travel together to the 2016 World Daffodil Congress in Missouri.

My grief is so over whelming I can’t think clearly except we have lost one of the best.

  1. This is absolutely devastating!

Joy has lost a wonderful mate. Those of us who knew Ian have lost a wonderful friend. The world daffodil community has lost one of its brightest and most promising hybridists.

Let us hope that the extraordinary seedlings Ian had bred and are growing in his pipeline are not lost. May Ian long be remembered for his daffodils.

  2. Thanks for your heartfelt words Will.

I did not know Ian well but I do recall him working to exhaustion at the World Daffodil Convention in 2004 and at numerous daffodil shows since. He was a loyal and long standing supporter of the show here in Canberra and some of the new seedlings he showed were stunning. I think he was particularly proud of his progress with pink perianths. This is a great loss to the daffodil world.

My condolences to Joy and his friends and family.

  3. Ian’s love of daffodils knew no bounds. He gave it his all.

    Sincere condolences to his family.
