Our local Otaki Horticultural Society had our 116 th Spring show on Friday 5 September .We have downsized to a smaller one day show as our regular growers and supporters are all steadily ageing ; up and down in one day is an easier option . We were pleased with a total of about 350 blooms staged as we knew many were holding back their champions for the N I National , next weekend close by in Waikanae . We have had virtually no rain for three weeks ; the flowers were on average , just a little undersize but in good condition as the winds had also been absent .
Champion Bloom was a very tidy 4 Y – R BALLISTIC , one of over a dozen very nice blooms that were pleased to win for yours truly on my home patch .
Reserve Champion went to Palmerston North grower Brian MacKenzie with a large , very round 2 Y – O VALLEY GLOW
.
BERMUDA TRIANGLE 1 Y- Y was premier yellow trumpet for JFM .It was a new flower for most – it is a very recent Peter Ramsay registration and bulbs were swapped for Ballistic bulbs . A big flower on a tall , strong stem , it opens and stays a little hooded but dresses very easily to an imposing flower .
Wayne Hughes took the 1Y – O prem with sdlg 202/117 , 9 – 1 .Very smooth , good stance , deeper orange at the trumpet mouth .
POPS LEGACY was one of many prems for Brian MacKenzie
Brian also had reverse prem with TRUMPET WARRIOR .
IMPECCABLE was prem 2 Y – Y for Wayne Hughes .
FLORENCE JOY was prem for Brian MacKenzie .
PINK SAPPHIRE was prem for J F M .
FLYING CLOUD was Prem for Julie Harris .
OMEOMY was Prem for JFM .
CENTREFOLD was Prem for J F M .
Brian also had Div 6 Prem with RAPTURE
L – 24 – 2 , a LIMEQUILLA sdlg was Prem for Wilf Hall .
Wilf had a host of fine new tazettas on display but won Prem with the oldie HIGHFIELD BEAUTY .
HAWERA was Prem for Alice and Rex Hannam .
PETITE MAGIC was Prem Split and Prem Intermediate for Wilf Hall .
Prem intermediate Grower was a big CAVALLI KING for Lizz Murray .
Historic Prem was TELEMONIUS PLENUS for Brian MacKENZIE . Vase of 3 Prem was a nice 2 Y – Y for Wayne Hughes ., sorry , no photo .
That’s one beautiful ‘Ballistic’ John excellent flower well done.
Malcolm
Thanks John, for getting a full set of photos up so quickly. Judging by the quality of flower we are going to have a cracking show at Waikanae next weekend. I am reluctant to bring any of our small, dry and cold affected flowers into such an arena.
Dave
Lovely photos John, thanks for posting them. The Ballistic is beautiful, congratulations!
Me too, Dave, its been dry and cold here too.
