Our local newspaper , THE OTAKI MAIL , established about 1892 , a small tabloid monthly is delivered to 3000 households in the greater Otaki , Te Horo and Manakau area , total population about 8,000 .We have a small but active Historical Society in town and they contribute a page to each monthly publication . A section of their page is always a piece from an earlier edition , often many , many decades ago . For the September 2014 edition , they published a small piece about the 1924 BULB SHOW , along with a photo of the 1920 Champion Bloom . , MACEBEARER – 2 w – YO . In that period the Otaki Mail was probably a daily paper and the show was then on a Friday, as it still is today . The grower / exhibitor , was Harold Small , a past president and prominent exhibitor of that era .
