Hand-over Time – South to North .

As  Lawrence  T  mentioned  in his  very  interesting  recent  post  ,  we are  almost  out  of  flowers  and it,s  time  to  pass  the  baton  to  the  Northern  growers  .I  picked  a  few  late  blooms  today and  also  met  Wilf  Hall , who  also  had his  last  few  flowers  .I   mentioned  the  post  from  Lawrence  and  Wilf  commented  that  it  was   this  week  in  2012  that  Wilf  and  Lawrence  were  hosted  by  Harold  K   and  Steve  H  ,  for  a  few  days  in  California  before  their  engagements  at  the  Nashville  Fall  Board  meeting  . A  trip  that Wilf  recalls fondly  .Whilst  in  California  they  visited  Bill  Welch  ;  Wilf  commented  that  he  would  expect  Bill  to  be  picking  a  lot  of  beautiful  tazettas  between  now  and  Christmas.  So  with  Harold  , Mary  Lou and  Bill  flowering  ,  the  North  is  well  able  to  keep  the  International  daffodil  season  going  . It,s  an  interesting  concept  that  on  any  given  day  of  the  year  ,  there  will  be  daffs  flowering  somewhere  in  the  world .

Wilf  had  a  late  flowering  tazetta  ; three 60 – 70 mm   heads  on  a  shortish  stem  .  GMX  – 88    has been  measured  for  registration  ,  it  will  be  8 W GW  ,  however  that  code does  not  do  it  justice  .  The  cup is  clean  white  on  the  outside  but  the  inside  has  a  deep  green  throat  that  turns  lime  yellow  further  up  the cup  .  Different and  distinctive  .And Wilf  commented  ,  with  a  cheeky  smile  , ”  definitely  an  Intermediate  tazetta  ,  if  such  a  class  exists .” .

Wilf also  had  a  handul  of  COMO  ,  quite  fresh  with  no  cup  burning  . Very  White  and  quite  round  , –  easy  to  see  how  it  has  influenced  many  of  the  round  poet  seedlings  that  the  Kiwi  breeders  are  producing .Also  , larger  than  many  of  the  older  poets  .

One  of  the  last  in  John  Hollevers  patch  was  a  nice  pink  that  had  just  opened – very  late  . LADYMEADS  , 2W – P  , is  a  Noel  Burr  2003  registration  .A beautiful  show  quality  perianth  ,  good  size  and  a  pink  cup  that  under  a  bright  sun  ,  almost  had  orange / pink  tones  .An  impressive  flower  but  to  late  for  even  the  very  late  shows  .

LAST DICE  is  an  attractive  ,  two tone  yellow  double  and  I  will  have  one  more  big  bunch  of  it  as  my  final  season  daffs .

I  still  have  a  few photos  of  odds  and  ends  , –  interesting  flowers  from  over  the  show  season  ,  to  post  as  time  permits  over  the  next  few  weeks .

If  any  other  Kiwi  growers  have  photos  from  the shows  or  recent  registrations , ( particularly  if  they  are  not  on  DAFFSEEK    ) , I  will  hopefully  put  them  up  on  daffnet  if  you  can  EMAIL   them  to  me  .  November  is  usually  a  quiet  month  and  we  always  need  a  few  posts  to  keep  the  interest  in  our  favourite  flower  and  website  , busy .Meanwhile  I  have  quite  a  few  beautiful  HIPPEASTRUMS   just  starting  to  flower  and  keep  me  happy  over  the  early  summer .
