2015 Murphys Show – ADS Award Winners

The 2015 Murphys show was March 21-22 at Kautz Ironstone Vineyards. Murphys is an historic gold mining town in the Mother Lode region of California. We had a very early season in California so several of us were holding flowers in refrigerators for a couple weeks so that there would be flowers for this show. You’ll see some flowers were wilting by the time I got around to photographing them. Of course they were barely holding up during the judging. I took some photos with a hand held camera in ambient light just to capture the flowers quickly before they wilted any more. Since it was a small show with fewer than normal ADS awards, I’ll show them all in this posting rather than spread them out over several postings. Any award that’s not mentioned was not given. So here they are in the order in which they’re listed in the show report. The single cultivar winners come first, followed by the standard collections and then the miniature collections.

The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the container classes.

The Rose Ribbon is for the best standard seedling excluding container classes exhibited by its originator excluding the container classes. This was shown as 7Y-Y although it had a green cast. Still, it was closer to yellow than green.

The Miniature Gold Ribbon is for the best miniature in the show excluding the container classes.

The Miniature Rose Ribbon is for the best miniature seedling excluding container classes exhibited by its originator.

The White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 standards. I’m somewhat chagrined that this exhibit won, but as they say, “The decision of the judges is final.”

The Miniature White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 miniatures.

The Best Intermediate bloom is chosen only from the Intermediate section plus the standard collections. That means the judges don’t have to scour the entire show looking for it.

This and some of the miniature collections barely survived the judging and had started to wilt by the time I got around to photographing them.

This award is for the best bloom in the Historic Section of the show.

It was obviously a good year for ‘Thalia.’ You’ll shortly see that it was also a good year for ‘Tahiti.’

The best classic bloom is chosen from blooms in the Classic Section. The winner happened to be the middle bloom in a set of three.

Unlike the other sections, the Classic Section has an award for the best single stem exhibit as well as the best bloom in the section.

Yes, the middle flower was the best bloom in the Classics Section. There were other cultivars exhibited, but I guess this was the year for ‘Tahiti.’

‘Tahiti’ as also the best bloom in the Small Grower Section. This section is open only to exhibitors who grow 50 or fewer cultivars.

There were three entries in this class. This half wine barrel of ‘Avalon’ certainly gets full credit for “floriferousness.” Try putting a half wine barrel in your car to take to a show!

The Lavender Ribbon is for the best collection of five miniatures. Under a recent rule change, entries in the Miniature Red-White-Blue class are now eligible for the Lavender Ribbon. Flowers in the winning collection are

Yes, ‘Diamond Ring’ is folding, but it was okay during judging.

The Bankhead class calls for 9 miniatures from at least 3 RHS divisions. Flowers in the winning collection are:

The MS 142 refers to Michael Salmon’s accession number. He was a collector and propagator of Narcissus species.

So this completes the ADS award winners at the 2015 Murphys show.
