Bambi

David Bell was well known for the advances he made in yellow/pink cultivars. For many Hicol was a parent. Hicol was not a great flower but he recognized its breeding potential.
Last week I posted photo of a lovely little yellow trumpet from Bambi OP. I also marked a miniature 1W-Y, slug eaten but looking to have potential. Today I picked another Bambi OP bicolour mini trumpet, starry but with clean colours and good substance. For all you breeders of miniature daffodils out there think about this. Bambi may be an ugly duckling but it may also have potential for breeding some rather nice miniature trumpets.

  1. David you are correct. Many beautiful swans only yield ugly ducklings but many ugly ducklings can make beautiful swans. :-)

I was never able to set seed on Bambi. Will have to try again.

  2. I have to agree with you David. Bambi might not be the greatest of flowers but it flowers prolifically and is a cheery start to the season. I have several selections from Bambi x N Cyclamineus that flower very early and are strong healthy growers. Sure they will never reach the show bench but they make a nice bright pot before most daffodils are through the ground. They have set seed this year self pollinated so who knows what I might get in 3 to 4 years.
