2000 World Daffodil Convention Videos

2000 is not a typo; I do mean 2000 and not 2016. The World Daffodil Convention was at Portland, Oregon in 2000 under joint hosting by the Oregon Daffodil Society and the American Daffodil Society. There was a 2-hour VHS videotape distributed after the convention, and we have digitized it to put it on DaffTube for on-line viewing (and downloading). Because it was two hours long, we’ve divided it into 5 parts, each under a half hour. Some of the scenes (like daffodils with a dark background) were overexposed on the tape, and there’s nothing we can do about that. VHS was the squarish 4:3 aspect ratio, not wide screen.  VHS was also lower quality than standard definition television. The result is that we have digitized the tape into 320 x 240 video.

This may sound unimpressive, but if you were at the World Daffodil Convention in 2000, you will probably enjoy seeing the videos anyway.  See whom you can identify!  See what your friends looked like in 2000! See if you’re in one of the videos! What’s covered are staging, registration, judging, awards, banquet speeches, farm visits, hybridizers panel, and international judging panel. If instead of navigating through DaffTube you want to go directly to these videos, the URL is http://dafftube.org/shows-events/2000-world-daffodil-convention/

DaffTube also has slide programs from the conventions in 2004 and 2012 and the world tour in 2008.  There exists a VHS tape of the 1996 convention in New Zealand, but we do not know who owns the copyright, and without their permission we can’t reproduce it.

Enjoy this look back in the past!

  1. Hi Kirby,

The Canterbury Horticultural Society made a video of Daffodil World 96. I am guessing that this is the tape you are referring to. As a Board member of the CHS I am sure that there will be no objection to the video being reproduced. There are no copyright issues with the production.
