I enjoyed writing an article on ORANGE FLUSHED PERIANTHS for the NZ Daffodil Annual 2015 ; it was enhanced by very clever photo placement by our new editor Trevor Rollinson , who did a great job on his first of many annuals . I realised just how few photos of the seedlings I had taken as they are not often exhibited .I was surprised at the positive feedback and resolved to put a few more on the benches this season . I had a good range of ” flushers ” out for my home Otaki Show and assembled a display that certainly created a lot of interest ..I also put three vases of three flushers in the competitive section to get the judges opinion . Not all the seedling varieties mentioned in the article were out for Otaki ; however they were for Wanganui , two weeks later. I sent 3 bunches through along with 7 bunches of split,s from John Hollever and understand they made an attractive display .Here are a few flushers , seedlings and great flowers from others .
The Otaki display – nicely filled the corner .- are they real daffs was the usual question .
Creag Dubh John Lea – 1978 set the standard for exhibition flowers – color , form and size but also a 4 inch neck .
Cameo Flush Peter Ramsay 2003 , size , form and colour , dominant in NZ for many years .
06 – 141 Red Haze – x – Kiwi Solstice , – colour and form . Won prem at Otaki from good vases of Cameo Flush and Creag Dubh .
Stylish An early Phillips registration – good colour robust . A well proven breeder for flushers . Probably a Red Hot seedling .
Red Hot – One of the first Kiwi flushers , 1975 , — Jim O,More .Not a big flower but was a colour leader in it,s day .
06 – 46 4 O – O ( Cull 2 O – R , Spelter x Tekapo ) – x – Kiwi Solstice , is one of my more consistent flushed double seedling . A good ,even light flush , fair form , good stem and neck , fertile both ways .
06 – 42 , 4O – R , bred Creag Dubh – x – ( 4Y – O Cinel x Fiji ) has probably the best perianth and colour flush .However , both parents had long , 3 inch + necks and so does this seedling . It is not deeply layered but the perianth is what I am after , smooth , good texture and colour .
06 – 22 , JFM sdlg 2 O – R – x – Kiwi Sunset , Again , the neck is a little long and perhaps weak .Fair form but a difficult size – one of those 90 mm flowers , not intermediate and small for the big league . A very vigorous grower , light stem .
Unknown , seedling from Otaki display , good size and colour ,but centers rather jumbled .
The first flusher I showed , 1990 – 30 , Red Hot – x – Tonga .Fair form , round but not deeply layered.About 98 mm ,even light flush good stem and neck .
Wishful , 4 o – R , Tourist x – Tahiti .Sdlg 95 – 12 was another early double . A very strong stem and solid short neck , great for a double .Lightly layered , light flush , round and good size .Tourist is an early Brogden flusher , in the breeding of the outstanding APACHE CHIEF from Spud .
Max Hamilton 4O – R , sent from Max , no number or breeding , just ” try this ; tall and big , good flush . ” .Yes , tall , big , open centers with a lot of pistils .However they seldom have just 3 regular lobes ; usually quite a few and at different levels .Despite pollinating dozens of blooms , no seed set . Very vigorous , a ” different ” market double .
The N Z Daff Bulletin arrived today ; Cameo Flush was the Flushed Premier North and a Brogden Sdlg was South Premier BB 03-13-2 .Spud regularly crosses just a few flushers and has a fine flower in APACHE CHIEF and several promising seedlings .Quite a lot of interest and new developments in the Kiwi flushers . A keen eye may read one of the display labels as Cameo Blush ; no , it is not a new variety , just me blushing as I wrote the label wrongly .It was just before midnight , the night before the show , when I put the display together; ready to open at 7 am next morning and do more show flowers .Cameo FLUSH had me blushing just a little .
Hope the orange flushed perianth trend continues. Some really nice colorful flowers.
Thanks for posting
Interesting that Creag Dubh gets kudos. In Southern California one never gets the orange flush in the perianth. Stylish is always reliable for orange perianths here, as is the more modern Warm Day.
